Torres: “Barça, cuidado con Cristiano Ronaldo”

Fernando Torres llega a la cita creando expectación. Su figura impone y su fútbol se ha ganado el corazón de los aficionados del Liverpool. En su primera temporada lleva ya 22 goles en la Premier y su equipo va camino de conseguir algún título importante

Y es que vino a Inglaterra para eso. Para salir de la monotonía perdedora de su Atlético y convertirse en alguien importante en el fútbol. ‘The Kid’ es el ídolo de un Liverpool fabricado por Rafa Benítez, el técnico que apostó por él y por quien siente devoción Torres. Sin duda, no se equivocó con el ‘Niño’ porque va camino de convertirse en un mito de Anfield. El futuro es suyo.

¿Tal y como le han ido las cosas, igual hasta se arrepiente de no haber salido antes de la Liga?

No me arrepiento porque nunca se sabe. Igual si hubiese salido antes no habría pasado nada de esto. Igual todo hubiese sido más lento. Las cosas han ido como han ido y hay que estar satisfecho, aunque queda mucho.

Había gente que dudaba de la calidad de Torres. ¿Llegar aquí y demostrar su calidad ha sido como una revancha?

Aunque sea una pena, a veces tienes que salir fuera para que la gente te valore y tú crecer y demostrar que eres un buen jugador. No soy el único. Ha pasado con Fàbregas, Reina, Xabi Alonso. Esto es una lástima para el fútbol español, pero estoy convencido que va a ir a más en el futuro.

Cuentan que decidió irse del Atlético tras recibir el 0-6 ante el Barça la temporada pasada...

No fue exactamente ese partido. Durante muchos años iban pasando cosas y veía que el club no funcionaba como a mi me gustaría. Aquella fue la última gota. Colmó el vaso. Creo que en aquel partido, si el Barcelona ganaba seguía en la lucha por la Liga y si lo hacíamos nosotros ayudábamos al Madrid. Vi pancartas de aficionados del Atleti que iban a favor del Barcelona y eso pesa. Con el 0-6 me replanteé el futuro. No quería perder el tiempo porque sabía que todo eso no podía ir a mejor.

Al final, su salida puede haber salido bien para usted y el Atlético de Madrid.

El tiempo lo dirá. A día de hoy, el Atlético ha podido hacer muy buenos fichajes y está luchando para entrar en Champions. Es un paso más para la recuperación del club. A mí me ha ido bien. Estoy en la semifinal de la Champìons y metiendo más goles que nunca.

¿Pudo fichar en alguna ocasión por el Barcelona porque se habló mucho de un gran interés?

Hubo un interés al poco de debutar en Primera. El Barça es un club al que tengo mucho cariño porque la gente siempre me ha tratado muy bien. Y es curioso porque en el Camp Nou siempre me salían muy buenos partidos. Tengo amigos y la ciudad me encanta. Igual pudo ser, pero no se dio y tampoco es una cosa en la que haya que darle muchas vueltas ahora.

¿Cómo ve las ‘semis’ de Champions? ¿La del Liverpool con el Chelsea es la más imprevisible?

Las dos van a estar muy igualadas. Quizás la nuestra no va a ser tan vistosa como la que se vio ante el Arsenal. Somos dos equipos poco ingleses. Somos muy tácticos y encajamos pocos goles. Se va a decidir en detalles, igual en alguna jugada de estrategia. En cambio, la del Barcelona con el Manchester puede ser espectacular. En España no se sabe el nivel espectacular que tiene el Manchester y es para tener cuidado. Aquí los vemos cada semana y es impresionante como juegan. Cristiano Ronaldo está a otro nivel, pero sufren mucho con los equipos que tienen la pelota y el Barcelona puede jugar bien y ganarles. Ellos no están acostumbrados a defender en Inglaterra porque aquí ellos tienen el balón.

¿Qué es lo que más debe temer el Barcelona del Manchester?

Es difícil prever que es lo que van a hacer en ataque. Atrás tienen un sistema, pero arriba tienen futbolistas que juegan con movilidad. Es difícil saber cómo te atacan. Ronaldo, Giggs, Nani, Tévez son muy movibles. Juegan en superioridad y son difíciles de defender.

Habla con devoción del luso.

El está por encima de todos los demás jugadores del mundo. Se echa el equipo a la espalda en todos los partidos. Te mete goles con todas las partes del cuerpo, desborda. Es un jugador muy completo. El Barcelona lo que debe hacer es taparlo a él porque así van a tener muchas opciones de pasar la eliminatoria. Si él se siente cómodo y va a por el partido, las cosas se les van a complicar. Pero insisto en que la eliminatoria está abierta y puede pasar. No es imposible eliminar al Manchester y veo factible que el Barcelona llegue a la final. A mi me encantaría que pasasen y que nos encontremos con ellos en Moscú. Ojalá haya una final con muchos españoles.

Es que si pasa el Liverpool es para hacerle un monumento a Benítez por su eficacia.

Parece fácil, pero no lo es llegar a tres ‘semis’ en cuatro años. La forma de trabajar de Rafa es muy buena para las eliminatorias a doble partido. Muchos equipos las juegan a 90 minutos, pero tienes que pensar que duran 180 y que éstas puede dar muchas vueltas. Rafa en eso es muy bueno y ahí tienes los resultados. Como curiosidad, en la vuelta ante el Arsenal nos valía el empate y jugamos con dos puntas y cambió a Gerrard de sitio. Lo hablamos con los compañeros y estábamos tranquilos porque siempre acierta. Si lo hace el entrenador es porque sabe lo que hace y se le respeta.

“Nunca iría al Real Madrid”

¿Si volviese al fútbol español y a un grande, a cuál iría?

Si soy sincero, no pienso volver al fútbol español, aunque esto puede cambiar. Me gustaría estar en Liverpool mucho tiempo. Lo que tengo claro es que al Madrid no me gustaría ir, no iría nunca. A veces pienso que si tengo la opción de ir al Real Madrid es que tengo la opción de ir a otros sitios y preferiría siempre estos otros sitios.

¿Y al Atlético tampoco?

Me gustaría volver porque se me han quedado muchas espinas dentro. Con la conciencia tranquila de haber dado todo de mí, pero hay cosas en el camino que estaban ahí para conseguirlas. Me gustaría haber ganado un título, el simple hecho de ganar al Real Madrid. Jugar la Champions. Son muchos sentimientos encontrados, aunque tomé la decisión correcta.

¿Y por qué Liverpool?

Hubo muchas ofertas y de grandes clubs. Algunas no pasaron de intereses, pero ésta vimos desde el principio que iba en serio y que tiraría hacia adelante. Me la comunicaron y me llamó Rafa directamente y decidí aceptarla. Vi que había compañeros españoles que me hablaban maravillas de este equipo, del club, de la ciudad. Es un club en el que trabajan todos y pelean por los títulos. Tenían unos valores que siempre perseguí y por eso estoy muy bien aquí.

Un equipo joven y que parece que puede ir a más...

Este equipo puede mejorar y la institución también. Hay que dar un paso más y pelear por la Premier. No hemos tocado techo y nos da la sensación que podemos seguir creciendo para marcar una época bonita.

En este bloque hay muchos jugadores, pero Benítez siempre ha hablado muy bien del argentino Mascherano, un jugador al que se le relacionó con el Barça...

Por suerte no se lo llevó el Barcelona porque para nosotros es fundamental. Hay pocos centrocampistas defensivos en el mundo que puedan jugar solos. Está él trabajando y da libertad a los demás. Es uno de estos futbolistas al que nunca se les va a reconocer su trabajo. Le pasó al Madrid con Makelele. Cuando se van, empiezas a perder puntos y partidos. Todo equipo grande que quiera ganar títulos necesita un gran centrocampista defensivo. Y Mascherano lo es. Por eso no me extraña que haya intereses de grandes clubs europeos.

Torres drops Barcelona hint

Fernando Torres arrives for our interview conjuring up all sorts of expectations. His presence is imposing and his football has won over the hearts of the Liverpool supporters. In his first season, he has already scored 22 Premier League goals and his team is on its way to achieving great things.


And that’s the reason why he migrated to England; to escape Atletico’s monotony of losing and to become someone important in the world of football. ‘The Kid’ is the icon of Benitez’s Liverpool, the manager who took a chance on him and for whom Torres feels devoted. Without a doubt, he didn’t make a mistake with el ‘Niño’ because he is own his way to becoming an Anfield legend. The future is his.

The way things are working out for you, do you regret not having left La Liga earlier in your career?

- No, because you never know what could’ve happened. Maybe if I have left earlier none of this would be happening now. Maybe everything would’ve gone much slower. Things turned out the way they have and I’m satisfied, although there’s still a long way to go.

There were people who doubted your quality. Has all of this been somewhat of a revenge for you?

- Although it’s sad, sometimes you have to go somewhere else for people to value you and for you to grow and demonstrate that you’re a good player. I’m not the only one that has gone through it. It’s happened to Fabregas, Reina, Xabi Alonso. It’s a shame for Spanish football but I’m convinced that it will get even worse in the future.

There is a rumour that you decided to leave Atletico after losing 0-6 to Barça last season…

- It wasn’t that match precisely. It was about a lot of things that happened during the years and I saw that the club wasn’t working the way I hoped. That was just the last straw. If I remember correctly Barcelona needed to win that match to keep fighting for the title and if we beat them we would be helping Real Madrid. I saw banners made by Atleti fans that were pro Barcelona and that hurt. After the 0-6 I considered my future. I didn’t want to waste any more time because I realized that things were not going to get better.

When it’s all said and done, your exit may end up being beneficial for you and for Atletico de Madrid

- Time will tell. Today, Atletico have been able to make some very good signings and they’re fighting to qualify for the Champions. It’s a step forward in the right direction. For me it’s been great. I’m playing the in semifinal of the Champions and scoring more goals than ever.

Were you ever close to signing for Barcelona. There was talk at one point of plenty of interest from the club?

- There was some interest shortly after I made my debut in Primera. Barça is a great club and I feel great affection for them because their supporters have always treated me really well. It’s a bit odd because I’ve always played some great matches at Camp Nou. I have friends there and I love the city. It could’ve happened but it didn’t and it’s not something I give a lot of thought nowadays.

What’s your outlook for the ‘semis’? Is your tie against Chelsea the more unpredictable of the two?

- Both ties will be evenly matched. Perhaps ours won’t be as pleasing to the eye as our previous one against Arsenal. We’re not your typical English teams. We’re very tactical and neither of us concede many goals. It will come down to the small details, perhaps on a set piece. On the other hand, Barcelona vs. Manchester could be a great show. I don’t think that people in Spain are well aware of Manchester’s prowess and it’s something to be wary of. Here, we see them every week and they way they play is amazing. Cristiano Ronaldo is on a whole different level but they have trouble with teams that like to have possession and Barcelona could play well and beat them. They’re not used to defending in England because here they’re the ones who usually have the ball.

What’s the main thing Barcelona should be wary of about Manchester

- It’s difficult to predict what they’ll do on attack. At the back they have a system but up front they have players that are constantly moving around. It’s hard to know how they will attack. Ronaldo, Giggs, Nani, Tevez are all very mobile. They attack in numbers and they’re difficult to defend against.

You speak in awe of the Portuguese

- He’s above the rest of the players in the world. He carries the team on his shoulders every match. He can score with every part of his body, he can beat you off the dribble. A very complete player. What Barcelona must do is to isolate him and then they will have a better chance of going through. If he gets comfortable and is inspired, it will be very complicated for Barcelona. But I insist that the tie is very balanced and they can go through. It’s not impossible to defeat Manchester and I think Barcelona could very well make it to the final. I would love for them to go through to the final and for us to meet in Moscow. I hope the final will be full of Spaniards.

If Liverpool go through it’s nothing short of a huge accomplishment and someone should build a monument in honour of Benitez for his efficiency

- It may seem easy, but it’s very difficult to reach three ‘semis’ in four years. His work methods are very good for the two-legged knockout competitions. Many teams prepare them for the 90 minutes but you must think they last 180 and anything could happen in all that time. Rafa is fantastic on that aspect and the results are visible. As an anecdote, for our return leg against Arsenal a draw would’ve sufficed yet we played with two strikers and with Gerrard playing a different position. We discussed it amongst the players but we were confident because he always gets it right. If the manager makes a decision it’s because he knows what he’s doing and we respect it.

If you came back to Spanish football and to one of the big clubs, which one would you choose?

- To be honest, I don’t plan on going back to Spanish football, although things can always change in the future. I would love to stay in Liverpool for many years. What’s clear to me is that I wouldn’t like to go to R.Madrid, I would never join them. My idea is that if I ever had the chance to join Real Madrid then I would also have the option to join some other great club and I would always choose those over them.

And what about Atletico?

- I would like to come back some day because I feel I’ve left some unfinished business there. With a clear conscience of having given it all there, but there were things in the way that I feel we could’ve accomplished. I would’ve liked to have won a title there, or just the simple fact of having never beat R.Madrid. Playing in the Champions. A lot of mixed feelings but I still feel I made the correct decision to leave.

And why did you choose Liverpool?

- There were many offers from big clubs. Some didn’t get any more serious than a passing interest, but we knew this was a serious one from the go and that we would go through with it. I was told about it and Rafa called me personally and I decided to accept the offer. My Spanish team-mates spoke marvels of this team, the club, the city. It’s a club where everyone works together and challenge to win silverware. They hold the same values I was interested in, and that’s why I’m very comfortable here.

A very young team that could keep growing and improving…

- This team can improve and so can the club. We must take another step forward and fight for the Premier. We haven’t topped ourselves and we get the feeling that we could keep growing and mark a beautiful era.

There are many good players in your squad, but Benitez always speaks very fondly of Mascherano, a player that was linked to Barça…

- Luckily Barcelona didn’t pry him away because he is very important for us. There aren’t many defensive midfielders in the world that can do a job by themselves. He works very hard and frees up other players. He’s one of those footballers that never get the credit they deserve. It happened to Makelele in Madrid. When they leave, you start losing points and matches. Every big club that has the ambition of winning titles needs a great defensive midfielder. And Mascherano is just that. That’s why I’m not surprised that many of the big clubs in Europe were interested.
